More and more small businesses are discovering the power of incorporating social networking into their online marketing strategies. Still, I am witnessing a plethora of mistakes in this regard.
First, professionalism. Small businesses often find the ease of creating a MySpace profile or Squidoo lens etc, and in taking on this endeavor, fail to incorporate all of the available tools available in the designing process. This causes sites to be one of two things, too flat or too busy! Not to mention that they are often lacking pertinent information, and so on. Just as with a website, the design of your profile is important as it is a direct reflection of your company.
Second, not taking measures to gain traffic. You must be active in pursuit of your network. This network is as valuable as an email list, in that these people who have considered you enough to approve you as their friend or to seek out your information, ARE a list of potential customers. Never settle simply for those who find you. And always be sure that you are directing them to your products and/or services. Chances are, that’s what they’re there for, and it is what your online marketing strategy is there for.
Finally, set yourself apart from the rest and ensure that you are offering valuable information. You have already found a place which produces targeted leads and traffic. Do not abuse this! Many individuals abuse these networks by over soliciting and deceiving. On any online medium, you have the capability of offering legitimate information and services geared to serve the needs of your customers. This is one important key in the essence of sound business strategy. Learning how to effectively utilize social networking can contribute in leaps and bounds to the success of your company.

One of the most common errors which I encounter is the misconception that simply having a website IS internet marketing. The fact is, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Yet, research shows that a large majority of small businesses take the time to incorporate a website, but do not develop a sound SEO strategy to generate traffic. And your website means nothing if it receives no traffic! What you have is a glorified business card!
The real purpose, which is almost always overlooked, is to generate the most traffic possible, hence increasing sales leads and ultimately your bottom line! You also want to ensure that when you do receive your traffic, that it is converting into legitimate profits. In order to do this you must cater to the wants and needs of your potential customers, and you must know what to actively promote, as well as what to avoid. SEO MUST be an active participant in the life of your website. Without it, you may as well forget about having a website altogether.
Utilize SEO to strategically target your niche and to generate positive leads for your business. Your website is a powerful tool if you incorporate the practices to utilize it efficiently and effectively.

I recently sat down with a few small business owners to find attempt to find out some of their secrets to success. In all of the conversations that I had, there was one prominent constant. The first step to success is having the right mindset!
Mindset is an important factor, first of all, in how we perceive the possibilities of our success. Someone once said that if you don’t believe that you can do something then you can’t. We power ourselves with will and determination, which is why success is the ultimate self realization. We often look back on our achievements in awe of how we got there. It all begins with a simple change in mindset.
Another factor which I encountered is the use of business coaching. Many small business experts agree that no single person has all of the knowledge they need to do everything right. Research is constantly being conducted, results applied and hence, the market and its tools are constantly changing to meet the current demand.
The good news is that there are people and programs available to help you in these aspects. You do not have to go it alone. Business in collaboration with the minds of many is another valuable step to take to ensure that your business is a successful one. And business coaches can provide you with that little insight you may need to provide yourself with a more sound system, be it in operations, marketing, finance, etc.
